Julia Alvarez was born March 27, 1950, in New York City. She was raised in the Dominican Republic. At the age of 10, Alvarez and her family fled the Dominican Republic because of her father's involvement in a plot to overthrow the dictator Trujillo. Alvarez went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in literature and writing. She then became an English professor at Middlebury College in Vermont.
